About the Artist

I have been drawing, painting, potting, and photographing all my life, but it was not until my husband and I bought a summer home in the Lakes Region of Maine in 1990 that I began my serious interest in and study of watercolor. I continue to be delighted by the challenges and surprises that watercolor brings, as well as the freshness and transparency of the medium and the white of the paper.

In addition to painting plein air (outside), I work in my studio on a variety of subjects, including portraits, buildings, florals, landscapes, and figures. I accept commissions, and particularly enjoy doing informal portraits.

Although I work primarily in traditional, transparent watercolor, I have recently begun experimenting with fluid acrylics, and have a number of new paintings in a style which mimics the look of batik or stained glass.  

Bio Info

Madeline is a graduate of Brown University and before retirement cofounded and ran a small publishing company in Silver Spring, MD. Although she has had no formal art training, she has taken a number of workshops with well known artists including Frank Webb, Skip Lawrence, Jean Grastorf, Linda Baker,  Fealing Lin, Ted Nuttall, and Mary Whyte.  

She was a Founding Member of Gallery 302 in Bridgton, ME, and an exhibiting artist for 7 years. In recent summers she has been teaching watercolor classes at the Gallery. In 2021 she was a guest artist at the gallery and a video of her newer work can be found under the Video Section on the Home Page.

Madeline has won numerous awards and purchase prizes at Bridgton’s Art in the Park, the Norway Art Festival, and shows in Portland and on the coast. She is a Signature member of both Potomac Valley Watercolorists and The Baltimore Watercolor Society.  When not in the studio she is probably on the tennis court or playing bridge.
